Description

Row of orthostats set in pairs at an average distance of 0.96 metres apart, regularly spaced at intervals of, on average, 1.76 metres. 103 stones survive in situ, while a further three may have fallen sideways from their original position and others, now overgrown with heather, were revealed by probing. Stone row changes orientation slightly at its approximate mid-point. A leat (102047) bisects stone row fifty metres from south-western end. Downslope from leat (102047), stone row is better preserved and stones survive to a greater height. At northern end is stone circle or cairn circle 103394. Dimensions: L 128.0m x H of tallest stone 0.96m
Orientation: NE-SW
Butler (1994, 170) states that about ten stones have been lost from stone row's current definable length, five of then since Rowe's description of 1848; Butler attributes loss to 1859 when Rev. Coppard halted destruction of the Trowlesworthy stone rows by leat builders. Loss of several other stones are attributed to construction of clay works leat (102047) (ibid.). Butler (ibid., fig 51.10) identifies a second leat - resulting in loss of a single stone from row - cutting this stone row north of 102047; this second leat is probably southern continuation of 102098 and 102058. Eleven stones are identified as fallen (ibid.). Butler suggests that stone row could have continued southwards as far as tributary of Blacka Brook, but he discounts possibility of a terminal stone ("holed pillar") on bank of stream, stating that is a boundary marker probably set up in 1835 (ibid., 171).
