Description
A rectangular cold plunge bath in the west wing, with steps down into bath from Room 14 on south side. The bath is Lined with hard signinum, with some faux marbre painted decoration on the in situ plaster surface. Opus signinum is missing from floor, which is of stone flags. On the east side is a drain leading out into the corridor [SNA62028]
The biodegredation survey recorded evidence of degredation of the plaster surfaces in the cold plunge bath in both pitting and disgranulation of the plaster base. The most obvious areas of deterioration were those affected by the leprose lichens at the base of the wall. The colonisation of the lichens was shown to penetrate the thin plaster and transform the surface making it more porous. The opus signum on the steps to the bath was physically eroded by the growth and attachment and shrinkage of biofilm, as seen in other rooms.[SNA62022]
