Summary
A rectangular room in the west wing of the villa, known to have partial survival of opus signinum floor, and earlier make-up layers below. The room also contains an earlier phase stokehole associated with the bath-house to north.

Description
A rectangular room in the west wing of the villa, first excavated in the 1860s and re-excavated by Richmond in 1957 and 1965 to confirm the floor levels. [SNA62028].
In 1996, the room was excavated again and the modern turf and Victorian backfill removed reveal intact archaeology beneath. An opus signium floor was the most recent surviving surface and the wall-plaster fragments underneath this floor were indicative of at least one phase of rebuilding in the west wing during the C4th. The evidence for rebuilding was supported by the remains of a stoke-hole that would have originally lead to the west bath house. No evidence of mosaic flooring or a hypocaust were visible in the room, however for the first time since the C19th excavations in-situ painted wall plaster was uncovered illustrating the vivid decoration of the rooms. Surviving archaeological features were re-buried under soil layer, geotextile marker, and coarse gravel [SNA62028].
This room with Room 7 was re-excavated and recorded in 2010 as part of the West Range Cover Building Project (SNA 65115). Rooms 7 & 8 now lie under the Education Room completed in 2012.
