Description
A small square room with exposed surviving features of Roman latrine. At the time of the management gazetteer this was part laid to gravel, with sections of stone water-channels and flag flooring are visible. The features have clearly been reconstructed, following excavation in the 1950s by Rutter and Richmond, however the extent of reconstruction is unknown. The general layout of latrine is shown. On the interior of the east wall the top section of an arch is visible and Bethell notes that other stone architectural fragments are present. The wall cappings for this room were renewed in 2006 with flat rough limestone flags. [SNA62028]
Rutter records that the lack of Roman material (and presence of C19th pot fragments) indicated that the room had been uncovered during the 1864 excavations but had been backfilled due to the lack of tessellated pavement. [SNA62044]
