Stone revetment wall featuring a recess that is now blocked with stone and soil. The revetment was most likely constructed as part of Old Mam Tor Road which was built in 1812 by the Sheffield & Chapel en-le-Firth Turnpike Company. The recess may feature a now blocked tunnel or drainage adit.

Description

(1) Stone revetment wall, most likely constructed as part of Old Mam Tor Road which was built in 1812 by the Sheffield & Chapel en-le-Firth Turnpike Company.

The construction of this road included the building of a tunnel running under the road between Cartgate (60466*1) - a horizontal adit on the west side of the road - and the crushing circle (60466*4) to the east but the exact location of this tunnel is at present uncertain. This section of revetment walling does feature a recess that is suggestive of an entrance or tunnel, but it is currently obscured by a build-up of stone blocks and soil. Further, Barnatt (1993) states that the tunnel was a little further north of this location, and was buried under road widening debris at the road's turning circle.

The angle of the northern recess wall is more visible from above and suggests an entrance access angle for ease of entry and exit to the north. This suggest that multiple tunnels were created during the construction of the road in the 19th century, to retain either access (or possibly drainage) to the mining area to the west of the road.
