Summary

Since 1960 the gun position of ‘Clem’, as well as the immediately adjacent structures, was buried by a considerable quantity of spoil, and remains buried at the time of writing. Most of this spoil appears to consist of inert soil. Later deposits of refuse, hardcore and metalwork have recently been removed by the National Trust. The archaeological potential of this zone is thought to be high, and indeed higher than the equivalent areas of its sister position at ‘Jane’, since there has been no access to these buried structures for many decades. In the best-case scenario, deposits, fixtures and fittings and portable artefacts will survive here that were directly associated with the operational service of the battery, or with its decommissioning phase.

Description

The eastern gun position at Wanstone, known as ‘Clem’, is similar (though not identical) to that of ‘Jane’, with the gun position itself flanked by twin magazines to its rear, with a crew shelter immediately behind the gun. However, due in part to its position closer to Wanstone Farm, a great deal more material, including both spoil and more recent fly-tipped material, was dumped into, over and behind the gun mount and neighbouring structures. The ‘Clem’ position is sub-divided into two separate zones, largely on the basis of the quantity of post-war dumping present.
