Summary

This rea represents the operational core of the D2 HAA battery (excluding the late war 5.25” guns north of Upper Road). It includes the fixed positions for four 3.7” guns, associated magazines, the command post, gun store and other ancillary structures. The condition of these varies, with some relatively intact, others partially collapsed, buried and/or overgrown.

Description

All of the structures have been subject to damage to some extent from human action (such as deliberate damage or graffiti), and/or natural causes such as weather and structural decay. Nonetheless, the archaeological potential of this zone is high, not only in terms of surviving and buried structures and features, but also in terms of the potential for the recovery of artefacts associated with the construction and operation of the battery. There is also lots of graffiti relating to the operational years of the battery, a disproportionally high amount compared to similar sites in the area. More modern graffiti distracts from this and at the time of writing work is ongoing to survey, record and remove the upsetting/crude modern-era graffiti.
