Description

[1] This site comprises a small hillock, with run-in shaft, on Odin Vein, which was probably sunk in the 18th century when the western parts of Odin Vein were first discovered (Rieuwerts and Ford 1976). The shaft is approached from the west by a short leat, following the contour, from the nearby stream. Why water was needed at the shaft is not certain, but one possibility is that it was piped down the shaft to be used for water-blast ventilation (Jim Rieuwerts pers. Comm.).
