Description

[1] The late 18th century flower garden is part of Calke Abbey's walled gardens (see also NTSMR 61110 & 68830) and contains some of the oldest buildings within the walled gardens located either side of the north garden wall. These buildings include an early heated greenhouse (now known as the 'Show House') and an adjacent aviary. The Show House may be the 'hothouse' mentioned in the estate records as being built by Rochdale in 1789. Hidden on the north side of the wall are the 'backsheds' which include a gardener's bothy and a boiler house. Externally these buildings largely retain their original appearance.

The Show House would have originally been heated by a hot flue system within its back wall. The wall would have been heated by underground stoves accessed by a tunnel, a short length of which survives underneath the backsheds and for a short distance to the west (SNA66555).

[2] The flower garden was enlarged by 1857. There is a Victorian alcove built into the NW corner with stepped shelves for the display of plants and a flower house and aviary built against its N wall (SNA67084).
