Description
Site of a building compound, part of a Cold War military installation, on the highest point of the West Myne land (887m), was pointed out by the farmer to the RCHME Surveyors. He said it was in use between 1953 and 1964, there was a building complex and two masts, the masts were set on the northern edge of Bratton Ball (not NT). The West Myne site was levelled in the 1960s. Visible now are several areas of concrete, apparent under the turf, which are likely to be the site of the compound. It is not known whether there were any buildings underground. Condition: good. [1]
RAF aerial photographs show that this location is the main antenna for the Cold War radar station (MNA199710) and clearly shows the site with two Radar masts and the operations block. Further information, sources and photograph references are available in the Exmoor National Park HER record MSO12638. [2]
