Description
Surface workings at Old Brandley Mine below Catbells, Derwentwater.
This small area of surface workings is confusing and not easily inspected as some features are deep and flooded to the collar. Just above the lake road is a group of three upcast banks which appear to be associated with short linear excavations. These are flooded and collected a lot of water running off the fell. These features may be the result of efforts to control water run off from the fell affecting the lake road. However it is also possible that they represent early efforts to locate the mineral vein later exploited by Old Brandley Mine.
This is made more likely by the existence of three circular shallow shaft workings further up the hillside and well above the lake road. These features are roughly 3m to 4m in diameter including the up cast spoil bank.
This record was made by a volunteer archaeological survey team from the Lorton and Derwent Fells Local History Society.
