Description

Collapsed level at Old Brandley Mine below Catbells, Derwentwater.

This feature is the fifth of six levels known to have existed at Old Brandley Mine and is the second bottom of the six, being position just above the lake road close to the source of With Syke.

There is no obvious evidence of the former level on site, the level likely to have been either deliberately blocked or run in as material slipped down the slope over time. There is however a marked depression close to the source of With Syke that is likely to indicate the location of the former level entrance. There is a small spoil heap below the likely location of the blocked level. The spoil heap is grassed over and shows little or no signs of mineralisation suggesting that this level was driven through rock without encountering significant mineral deposits. It is therefore possible that this level was therefore driven in to drain the stopes and mine workings accessed from the high levels.

A short distance from the source of With Syke is a double platform feature. Each platform being no more than 2m by 2m in size. Each platform is edged by a carefully placed row of rounded boulders. The function of this feature is not known.

This record was made by a volunteer archaeological survey team from the Lorton and Derwent Fells Local History Society.
