Description

Collapsed level at Old Brandley Mine below Catbells, Derwentwater.

This level is the forth of six at Old Brandley Mine and the forth from the top. The level entrance is now collapsed although its location can be easily and accurately inferred from surface inspection. It is not known if the level was blocked deliberately or has simply been inundated by slippage of material from above.

Below the former level is a large level platform constructed from mine spoil. This area measures some 9.5m by 31m. This area is likely to have been used as a sorting and dressing floor for the ore. The southern half of the spoil heap contains little mineralisation and indicates that this material was brought to the surface as the level was been driven forward. The northern half of the spoil heap is covered over with heavily mineralised material suggesting that this is the waste from the dressing of the ore and extraction of the mineral vein. This half of the spoil heap has not vegetated over suggesting that the material may have a high mineral content. The character of some of the finger dumps that made up the spoil heap indicate the use of a tipping tramway on site at some period. Evidence of a possible washing buddle exists close to the front edge of the dressing area and is visible as a rectangular depression that appears to have collected water escaping from the mouth of the adit.

This record was made by a volunteer archaeological survey team from the Lorton and Derwent Fells Local History Society.
