Description
Openwork and open level at Old Brandley Mine below Catbells, Derwentwater.
This level is the third of six at Old Brandley Mine and the third from the top. The level remains open today and appears as a small and relatively narrow horizontal entrance driven into solid rock. Roughly 8m above and south west of the open level are two small openworks. These openworks are irregular in shape and appear to be the result of mineral extraction from below breaking out to the surface. They do not appear suitable for winching or hauling along the level.
As with NTSMR 29936 below the level entrance is a small platform created from levelled spoil which is likely to have been used for hand sorting and crushing. This area is roughly 13m by 8m. Below this area is a spread of fine particle mineral rich material indicative of ore processing on-site.
This record was made by a volunteer archaeological survey team from the Lorton and Derwent Fells Local History Society.
