Description

Openwork and possible collapsed level at Old Brandley Mine below Catbells, Derwentwater. This is the fifth and second highest of the six recorded levels at Old Brandley Mine.

The level entrance is no longer visible and appears to have been run in some time ago. However, there is a long openwork some 15m long and 5m wide that is likely to be the remains of the former level or mine entrance. The level may have been deliberately back filled or gradually inundated by material slipping from above.

Below the open work is evidence of small hand sorting or dressing floor. Ore is likely to have been sorted at the mouth of the level on the small platform that is created by the levelling of spoil material. The spread of fine, mineral rich waste on the top of the spoil heap below the openwork also indicates sorting and crushing on-site.

This record was made by a volunteer archaeological survey team from the Lorton and Derwent Fells Local History Society.

Northern Archaeological Associates 2020
(Survey) Possible adit and spoil heap. May just be a natural formation. There isnt is not much of a spoil heap at the entrance to the possible collapsed adit, but this may have eroded away over time. Associated with mine 24408.
