Description
Pond on the S side of the track by the farm. It is sub-rectangular, approximately 15m E-W by a maximum of 9m wide, narrowing to the W end. The pond is enclosed by stone walls and sunk below ground level. First shown on the 1889 map and not on the Tithe, it is likely to be part of the mid-C19 improvements to the farm, and designed to provide water for a system of leats and water catchment features in the meadows to the S of the farm (not NT). There is an overgrown gully leading from the S side of the pond which would have fed water to the S boundary and then into a leat shown on the 1889 map running SE around the top edge of the field. An earthwork survives (not NT). Other earthworks running around the contour in the field to the W (not NT) may also have been supplied in this way.
It is a shame that the Trust does not own the meadows to the S, which were integral parts of the farm in the C19.
Recommendations: Ideally the pond and gully should be cleaned out periodically to prevent the vegetation taking hold and undermining the structure.
