Description
Roughly rectangular open grassed area, sloping gently down from west to east and bounded by the north west and south wings of the villa and the east corridor / portico.
Excavation has revealed intact Roman stratigraphy below the C19-C20th topsoil. Some C19th paths survive below the grass. No evidence of any formal Roman garden structures were found, suggesting the area was grassed over. The evidence did reveal the extent to which material was dumped over this area to form the courtyard, with depths of c.2m of make-up suggested on east side.[SNA62028]
In 2016 the north-east corner of the courtyard was excavated where it bounded the East Gallery and Room 25b thin deposits of mortar and Roman debris were found over natural clay [SNA68987].
