Description

A C19th shed erected over room 5 shortly after the 1860s excavations ended. The building (removed in 2011 as part of the West Range cover building work) had a wooden frame which rested on the restored Roman walls, with steeply-pitched, double-pitched slate roof. It covered the whole of room 5 and the door in north end gave access to interior. There were 3 windows along east wall allowing viewing access from an elevated wooden walkway in the west wing corridor/portico. The shed was insulated with rigid polystyrene foam board inside the roof, and provided with overhead radiant heating system controlled via humidistat. Treatment of doorway on the north wall and adjacent window revealed interest because of use of burr wood infills in panels. [SNA62028].

Thomas records that originally access to the mosaic was via the north doorway with an iron rail cordoning off part of the mosaic and a wooden plank allowing access over the length of the floor, however the door was kept locked and access was restricted to the south east corner of the room [SNA62038]

Before removal Bob Edwards carried out a historic buildings survey of the structure in 2010.(SNA64510))

In 2011, this building was taken down as part of the West Range Cover Building Project and the roof trusses were reused as part of the Salway Education Room to the west of the visitor reception building.
