Description

Long, narrow east-west aligned corridor, linking Rooms 1, 1a, 1b, 2 and 3 in the south wing of the C4th house. The corridor is on two levels and a modern wooden staircase joins the two parts, although as the width of the corridor differs across the levels it is unclear how representative of the original corridor this interpretation is. The ground level is laid to tarmac and the link to the east portico is blocked by a blank wall. Although no mosaics were found to be present below the corridor, little else is known of the buried archaeology along its length. The northern wall of the corridor also acts as a retaining wall for the garden court area [SNA62028].
The buried mosaic survey did not reveal any floor level in this room but recorded constructional make-up / levelling deposits [SNA62068]

SNA70752: On 1st March 2024, a Ground Probing Radar (GPR) survey of the south side of lower garden and the upper courtyard at Chedworth Roman Villa was undertaken by James Brown and Martin Papworth on Monday 15th April. The GPR survey described in this report is limited to the south-east part of the lower garden. (There was not time to survey the upper courtyard as originally planned). The survey covered the area of what is thought to have been the eastern end of the South Range of the villa.
This fieldwork hoped to discover whether this geophysical survey technique could detect the remains of walls and rooms to create a plan of rooms forming a South Range which continued east beyond the East Gallery and the upper courtyard. The results were disappointing. The report SNA70752 has taken the opportunity to review the evidence for the South Range and includes a chronological description of past research.
