Description
Rectangular area containing large rectangular plunge bath, and two smaller flanking semi-circular plunge baths on either side. The large plunge bath has steps down into it on the south side, and has a floor of large flat stone flags. Areas of pink opus signinum remain in situ on the walls. Drains connect the main bath to the smaller ones on either side.
Both the smaller baths are approached along a short flat "corridor" running alongside the larger bath, and have a straight edge on the south, with an elongated semi-circular shape to the north. Both are largely covered with opus signinum, still with its smoothed original surface over most of its area.
There are a number of large stone architectural fragments placed on the walls of the main bath, and on the floors of the short approach corridors.[SNA62028]
The environmental survey [2005] suggested that the most significant risks to this area were extremes of temperature and sunlight event. The area was not included Wakefield's microbiological survey but biodeteriration may also be a significant factor.
