Summary
A pair of linked rooms outside area of the west bath-house covered by modern shed, but integral to original design. Chamber to the west has furnace setting in situ (reconstructed in 1960s) and a doorway joins this chamber to the room on the east, which has no distinguishing features. The two rooms are interpreted as the furnace/"boiler room" for the bath-house hypocaust and hot water system, and its fuel store

Description
A pair of linked rooms interpreted as the furnace and fuel store for the hypocaust and hot water system of the west bath-house. The chamber to the west has furnace setting in situ which was partly excavated and reconstructed by Richmond in 1958. A doorway joins this chamber to the room on the east, which has no distinguishing features. These rooms are outside the area covered by modern shed, but were integral to original villa design. Previous problems with burrowing animal activity have been noted and have required the blocking of external features including a drain / air flue with gravel. [SNA62028]
