Description

Rectangular room in the west wing which has been identified as the changing room of the bath-house. It has an incomplete mosaic floor and ceramic hypocaust flues surviving in situ in walls. The mosaic was lifted and relaid using cement in 1978, and Goodburn undertook recording and consolidation of the underlying hypocaust system during thses works. The room also contains a truncated coppice stool rooted in wall, left in situ after the C19th excavation [SNA62028].

In the biodeterioration survey, the colonisers of room 10 was noted to be similar to those of room 5. Patterns of growth clearly reflected the routes of moisture through the walls and salt crystallisation was also found to follow these routes. The main form of deterioration was physical degradation caused by the black biofilms. Unlike in room 5, these had become racked and dried in room 10 with a consistency of hard bitumen. In areas where flaking was advanced, considerable amounts of stone / mortar was embedded in the underside. Of particular concern was the tubuli where this process had removed flakes of terracotta from the vent [SNA62022].
