Description
A rectangular room with no mosaic floor but complex C4th stratigraphy in situ. The room was first excavated in 1864 and was re-excavated in order to determine the floor level as part of Richmond's interventions in 1965. The east and west walls are of double thickness. Archaeological features have been re-buried under soil layer, geotextile marker, and coarse gravel.[SNA62028]
Excavation notes published in the Journal of Roman studies record that rooms 6 and 7 were rebuilt after a fire with room 7 being divided from 6 by a new partition wall to create a passage occupying the north part of the later room with The buried mosaic survey did not reveal evidence for a teaaelated floor in thi sroom, despite over 3000 loose teserae being recovered from the post-Roman deposits. The survey showed an east-west cross wall dividing the room and related floor levels. The northern elevation of this wall and the adjacent floor levels ahad been extensively burnt.[SNA62068]
This room with Room 8 were re-excavated and recorded in 2010 as part of the West Range Cover Building Project (SNA 65115). Rooms 7 & 8 now lie under the Education Room completed in 2012.
