Description

An internal corridor or ante-room to the north of the triclinium or dining-room (Room 5) this room has a C4th geometric mosaic floor which was reburied under soil layer, geotextile marker, and coarse gravel but in 2010 was re-excavated and is now displayed under the West Range Cover Building which was completed in 2010.

Originally this was part of a larger mosaic as illustrated by the photograph reproduced in the management gazetteer but shows signs of repair on the north edge (where it appears to have been truncated). The room has steps down to the corridor/portico.[SNA62028]

The buried mosaic survey of 2000 recorded the full extent of the mosaic in room 5b, which was found to be present throughout the majority of the room. However there was a marked difference in the preservation of the mosaic on its east and west sides, with the eastern part badly damaged and distorted by the weight of traffic over the tarmac walkway. The mosaic comprises a border and central geometric pattern patched with plain white tesserae to the north after the insertion of the wall dividing rooms 5b and 6. Traces of pink plaster mouldings were present at the base f the walls of the room, and an area of scorching was evident in the north-west corner.[SNA62068]
