Description
Site visit 20/05/2000:
Impressive hollow way running NE from Groat Hill, representing one of the major routes out of this side of the dale. The lower section is U-shaped, 2.5m wide nd 0.7m deep with water running down on the S side. A modern track runs to the N to avoid the wet area.
A short way into the field (OS field 4062), the route branches. One section turns E to run up the slope towards an opening in a field wall which encircles Barker Plantation (wall 225); this opening has recently been created, but there are two wall ends and no stoops, and it is possible that there was a former gate here. Another line runs N from this opening to rejoin the main track.
The main track continues NE up the slope, and here is an impressive earthwork hollow way 4m deep and 2.5m wide at the base. It levels out further NE, as flatter ground is reached, as passes through the perimeter wall (231) via a gate (NTSMR 33609). The track can be seen continuing NE, beyond the NT estate [1]-[5].
The route as described, without the branch to the new opening, is shown on the OS 1857 6" and 1912 25" maps [6] [7]. It is not shown on a map of 1782, but is on a map of 1828 [8] [9].
