Description
Site visit 17/03/2000:
Two stoop gate opening, located towards the centre of wall 436, NE of Cockayne. The opening is 2.52m wide with no gate. The N stoop is a rough slab, which may have a broken top, and partial tooling, 0.86m high, 0.26m wide and 0.29m thick, with three L-shaped sockets in the S face, one of which is right at the top; this might imply that the stoop has been broken. The S stoop is a rough slab with no tooling, 1.03m high, 0.25m wide and 0.37m thick with three sockets on the N face, c.0.06m in diameter and 0.05m deep, c.0.075m diameter and 0.06m deep, and c.0.05m diameter and 0.04m deep [1].
A gate is depicted in this location on a map of 1782 [2].
