  • BANK (EARTHWORK) (Iron Age - 800 BC to 42 AD)

Description

This bank, forms the N side of feature 30652/1. Viewed from the N it stands up to 2m high, the greatest height being at the point where 30652/1 starts to turn north. It has a surprisingly crisp sharp profile. There is some vegetation failure on the SE flank of the bank on either side of a N/S footpath cutting c.3m from the E end. The bank runs into 31652 and no longer turns N as shown on the VCH plan (1912). There is also some sheep poaching "opposite" the detached field wall, on the N side of the bank. Here the profile of the feature has an almost stepped appearance. The bank dwindles towards 31487, where it may have been quarried for the track causeway as well as following contours down into a natural gully.
