Description

From NT VBS (1992)

"An early design of a single storeyed Weaving Shed. Abutting the west end of Gibson Mill. Built as an additional phase in the development of the mill complex; possibly as late as 1860, but probably earlier. Its construction may have corresponded to the introduction of steam power to the mill. Well coursed hammer dressed gritstone with hammer dressed gritstone quoins. Flagstone roof (much removed). Roof of a twin gable form. This had a long roof light along its ridge. Originally had two entrances in the south wall, one has been blocked as has the door on the north wall. A set of garage doors was inserted in the LC20. Interior, flagstone floor. Machinery removed, but sockets and wear marks indicate the position of the looms.

In the post-industrial phases of the building, during the C20, the building served several functions. It served as part of a restaurant, EC20, a roller skating rink, MC20, a garage and store yard, LC20."

"The Weaving Shed is a MC19 addition to the mill complex. Whilst the date of its construction remains unclear, it almost certainly pre-dates 1861, the date given to it by P.Thomas. Although the map is in poor condition, the weaving shed does not seem to be shown on the OS first edition 6" map.

It abuts the W end of the mill, being aligned on an approximately N/S axis. The roof is a twin gable design. This used to have a long roof light along the west ridge. This type of roof as well as the building's alignment are an indication of an early date and design of the weaving shed. The characteristic "north light" roofs, where windows are incorporated into rows of asymmetrical gables, were an innovation of the LC19. The use of a shed to house the looms allowed better control of the atmospheric conditions for the cotton weaving process. Lighting, humidity and temperature were all important. These were more easily controlled in a single storeyed shed than a multi-storeyed building.

The walls are constructed of well coursed hammer dressed gritstone with large hammer dressed quoins. At the S end, the weaving shed extends beyond the S flank of the mill adjacent to the third window bay.

The south elevation shows the twin gable construction. There is an original doorway in the east of the two gables. The tiestone surrounds are of gritstone, displaying horizontal tooling to the jambs and vertical tooling to the lintel. The plank, battened door has mock panelling to the exterior. The south wall has been rebuilt at its west end, thus removing the physical evidence for the doorway. This part of the wall shows the remains of the former building between the weaving shed and the bridge and the C20 outside roof addition. In the centre of the wall is a pair of wooden garage doors. These were inserted in the LC20. The courses of stone have been sawn to allow the wooden frame to be inserted. Above the doors the wall has been rebuilt, thus obscuring the former roof valley between the two gables. The perspex canopy car port, held on rough wooden frame inside the weaving shed, is contemporary with the garage doors.

The north end elevation has one and a half gables. It abuts the west gable of the mill. At the east end of the north wall is a blocked door, with gritstone surrounds. There are two other areas of blocking visible on the interior of the north wall. The fill is of brick. As there is no sign of these on the external face of the wall, they may indicate the position of internal machinery. Alteratively, they may relate to the former roof structure, or a post-industrial phase of the building.

In the west flank wall there is a blocked opening, probably a window. It is tall but appears to be too narrow to be a door, and is well above the ground level. The interior walls are whitewashed. A line of metal bolts in the west gable of the mill indicates the position of a wall plate for the weaving shed roof. The interior floor is of flagstone. This contains a number of socket holes to secure machinery, possibly the weaving looms. Three worn pathways on a N/S axis may indicate the position of the looms.

The flagstone roof remains on the gabled east portion. It is carried on two sets of purlins and has a gritstone ridge. The other walls are hard topped with flagstone. The E flank wall has a wooden gutter held on metal brackets.

To the west of the Weaving shed is a triangular plot of land, formed by the revetment wall to the stream. In P.Thomas' plan of the mill complex this is interpreted as a store shed. It may have served such a function as an EC20 photograph appears to show a catslide roof extending from the weaving shed"
