Description

Two storey single pile three cell cross-passage house with rear projecting rectangular stair turret and catslide roof over. Single ridge with gable at east end and fully hipped roof at west end. Front single cell wing, two storey, with gable end. Small lean-to porch between wing and house. Large front lateral internal stack with projecting semi-circular oven. Three single storey lean-to extensions with single pitch roofs to the rear.

Roof of main house thatched, rear roof wheat reed, front similar but recently re-thatched. Thatch cut over first floor windows. Main house random coursed local stone, some quarried, most water- worn. Front ground floor lintels are a shallow arch of badly weathered red sandstone voussoirs, ( mortar used is too hard). Concrete sills. First floor wall slightly recessed to stack, timber lintels. Side elevation ( north) timber lintels, concrete sills, some strap pointing. Decayed oak lintel over back door, slate slab doorstep. Rear of rubble stone with brick jambs to windows. Blocked window above, sill of small window next to porch similar to those of wing. Wing of grey green and purple mainly waterworn boulders, squared for quoins, lintels are segmental stone arches with black chamfered brick sills. South window Gothic with indents in spandrels.

Late 16c three room cross-passage house with thatched roof supported by four or five jointed cruck trusses ( only two of these remain). Rear spiral stairs, now serving No. 1. Open fireplace with oven on front elevation. In the late 18c/ early 19c house divided into two cottages, front wing added blocking old cross-passage entrance. Fireplace and oven built in lower room ( now No 2 Tea Room) with stairs going up to first floor over the oven. The top of the turret so formed can be seen in No 2. This cottage probably became a shop in the mid-19c.

Outhouses, probably wash-houses added on back of No 1 and rear corner of No 2 dated 19c. Stone garden sheds built ( not shown on 1876 Holnicote Estate map but on 1889 OS Ist edition Somerset sheet XXXIV.2 scale 1:2,500).

Lean-to kitchen added early 20c to No 2 and brick outbuildings ( on 1929 OS map). Spiral staircase goes out of use and present stairs of No. 2 added. In the 1960's rear wash-houses converted to bathrooms, in No 2 the lavatory was in a separate room. Lobby built on corner of No 1 to give required access from kitchen to bathroom, old doorway blocked. Airing cupboard of No. 2 formed by bricking off the bake oven and removing most of it. No. 2 lavatory and bathroom combined by removing partition in 1980's.

Important Features:
Thatched roof with late 16c jointed cruck trusses surviving in No 2.
Chamfered and stopped late 16c beams in ground floor living rooms.
Rear turret staircase.
Open fireplace in Tea Room and with front projecting oven in living room B.
Mullioned leaded light windows with early 19c wrought iron fasteners in bedrooms G and H.
