Description

One and a half storey two cell cottage adjoining and to the northeast of No. 20 ( 115,020). Single ridge roof, ridge line dropping gently to the northeast, single central axial stack. Ridge of No.20 higher and angled differently; boarding between No. 20 eaves and No. 19 roof. Raked dormer in front pitch of roof. Rear roof catslide over bathroom and back door. Kitchen roof at slighter pitch. At junction with No. 20 rear pitch is continuous. Lowest row of tiles are shallowly pitched over bedroom H. Porch lean-to on west end in corner between No. 20 and No. 19, porch wall rounded in to No. 19 front wall which is set forward.

Roof of triple V tiles with collared ridge tiles, 3 plain ridge tiles at southwest end of ridge against No. 20. Between dormer and No. 20 double roman tiles. Porch double roman tiles, rear kitchen lean-to asbestos slates.

Front wall, sitting room rendered and limewashed, black tar band. Northeast end rubble stone, disturbed under window, may be blocked doorway. Wall curves inward following line of road. Side lean-to ( Wood Shed/ Store) below first floor window sills. Rear rubble stone. Bathroom lean-to rendered and painted. Kitchen lean-to brick ( late 19c, Wellington orange type).

Late 16c two storey cottage having single ground floor room with open fireplace ( large hollowed chamfers on beams). One up-one down cottage added late 18c/ early 19c to northeast wall with fireplace, probably using large stack on original cottage. The 1841 Selworthy Tithe map gives three people occupying 19 and 20. Between 1876 Holnicote Estate map and 1889 OS Somerset sheet XXXIV.2 a rear lean-to was added to the original cottage ( it is now the bathroom). It was probably a scullery. Early 20c, between the 1903 2nd edition and the 1929 revised edition of the 1889 map the brick lean-to was added to the rear of the northeast cottage, this is now the kitchen. The two parts were amalgamated by 1966, shown as one cottage on R J Swain's 1966 plans. Shown on the 1973 OS Map SS 9047-9147 as two cottages, this must have been copied from the previous edition ( 1929) as the cottages had been combined.

Important Features:
Beams with large hollow chamfers and step-runout stops ( late 16c).
Blocked, formerly open, fireplace in sitting room.
Cast-iron 19c fireplace complete with coal grate in bedroom F.
Plank and batten doors.
Casement windows.

In a satisfactory state of repair.

Outbuildings:

Wood Shed/ Store: Small lean-to built onto east end wall of house. Roof of corrugated iron over walls of rubble stone ( front), vertical rustic planking ( side) and weatherboard ( rear). Shown on the 1929 OS 1:2,500 map revised second edition ( Somerset sheet XXXIV.2), but not on the 1903 second edition. Important feature: floor of old stone flags. In a fair state of repair.

Coalshed, Privy and Store: The amount of ivy over the building hides the details of the roof and end walls, so that it is not certain that there was always a single pitch roof. The Store is lean-to on the earlier building ( probably mid 20c). Roof of corrugated asbestos over Coalshed and Privy, corrugated iron over Store. Walls of Coalshed and Privy waterworn purple stone, concrete lintels over doorways. Store walls butted vertical planking. Probably built between 1876 and 1889, it is not shown on the 1876 Holnicote Estate map but is on the 1889 OS Somerset sheet XXXIV.2, scale 1:2,500. Important features: external appearance, cobbled floor in Coalshed, door of Privy. In a fair state of repair - the building has far too much ivy over it. [1]

A probably a single room late 16th century-17th century cottage, with large axial stack, a second room having been added in the late 18thcentury-early 19thcentury. One and a half storeys, tiled roof (replacing thatch) and rubble stone walls, connected to Site 115020 [MNA138887] by a passage with a bedroom (of No.20) over it. The front of the original cottage is rendered and limewashed. Porch over front door. Lean-tos on gable end and rear give added space. The front of the building curves away towards the east, following the line of the road. [2]
