Description
A new chapel on a fresh plan of west tower, rectangular body, and south porch was subscribed for between 1793 and 1796; some work was done ( to excess of the amount subscribed) but it was left in an unfinished state. A list of subscribers to this building included William Pitt, the Younger, whose home at Burton Pynsent looked north towards Burrow Mump, and Admiral Sir Alexander Hood ( Thackray 1980). Some local disagreement is postulated as a possible reason, and there was some trouble over the bells of the old chapel which were being housed by two neighbouring churches. The new building does not figure in the Episcopal Registers, so it was never consecrated. It overlies the foundations of its predecessor, it subsequently acquired the status of a folly or sham ruin.
