Description

This adit is the main level to the lead mine located in Low Wood to the south of Hartsop village. The entrance to the adit is roughly 1.5m high and 1m wide. The adit appears to be unblocked and runs into the hillside as far as the eye can see although the adit was not explored. In front of the adit is a large working area that has been created through the tipping of extracted material being tipped down the slope. Finger dumps of spoil can be seen, the adit or level is linked to a series of buildings below, a number of other levels and a leat that brings water from a dam to the east.

This is likely to be the adit that supplied the majority of ore that was processed in the buildings that can be seen direct below the adit and are recorded as nstmr 27162 and 27166. The adit is likely to have superseded the workings higher up the slope, although it may be contemporary with the adit levels recorded as ntsmr 27174 and 27176.

This level is known as number 4 level and contains old wooden rails.
