Description

The NE of a pair of Bronze Age round barrows within the SW corner of Mam Tor hillfort, utilising the highest knoll. The barrow was almost levelled by the erection of a Home Guard post during World War II and has more recently been levelled off and a trig point erected. The O.S states the barrow has been levelled to a maximum height of 0.8m. The FMW report (1981) suggests the approximate height as 25cms, and the dimensions of the barrow as c. 48m by 26m N/S - E/W. The site receives an enormous amount of visitors, causing erosion around the trig. Point producing something of a dished profile, which has been levelled with stone chippings from time to time. No excavations have been carried out on the barrow. The barrow lies within the scheduled Ancient Monument of Mam Tor. Possibly associated with the barrow on the NE side is a low bank c. 15cm high and not more than 50cm wide. This appears to be part of a rectilinear feature surrounding the barrow (which is slightly north of centre) not visible on the ground but identified on aerial photographs (Riley, 848/11; 848/14; 848/15). It appears to be overlain by, and therefore predates, the Peak Forest Wall (site 60467) which is known to have been in existence in the early C17.

Bevan records one of the two barrows on the hilltop (see also feature 87) was dug in the early 19th century when human bodies, pottery sherds and a 'brass celt' (possibly a bronze flat axe?) were found (Bateman 1848; Pennington 1877). The 19th century excavators are unknown, as is the exact location of this excavation.
