  • ROUND BARROW (Late Neolithic to Early Bronze Age - 3000 BC to 1501 BC)

Description

One of two Bronze Age round barrows within the interior of the hillfort, this, the southwestern of the pair overlooks the S entrance to the hillfort, just below the hill crest. It was excavated in the early C19 by Thomas Bateman (an antiquarian who excavated a large number of sites in this area), and yielded a bronze axe and prehistoric pottery. There is some confusion in the records concerning the diameter and height of the round barrow. The NT survey team report the diameter as 18m (60ft), and the height 2m, with the top dug out, however, the English Heritage FMW report, states the diameter as 8m, and the height as 0.75m with an indented central area probably caused by Rooke Penningtons excavation. The reference to Penningtons is unclear and is not noted in the NMR Excavation Index. A site visit in June 1992 found both the NT and FMW measurements to be correct concerning the diameter, with the NT 18m measurement, relating to the diameter at the base of the barrow, and the FMW 8m measurement, relating to the diameter around the top of the barrow. However the height of the barrow appears to be closer to 2m.

The lip of the barrow around the dug-out centre is slightly worn, probably by visitor erosion and/or stock. It forms a prominent feature of the hill although below the crest. The barrow appears on a number of plans at 1:2500 scale (e.g O.S), and was recorded on a larger scale by Trent and Peak Arch. Trust in 1989. The barrow is within the scheduled area of Mam Tor hillfort.

Note: the FMW report state the grid reference as SK 12800 83700, and the NT states the grid reference as 1268 8356.
