Description
[1,2] Shooting cabin shown on O.S 1st Ed. 6" map 1880. Building of roughly dressed coursed rubble gritstone measuring 5.3m X 4.5m on a small terrace cut into the hillside above the stream in Upper North Grain. There is a flagstone floor inside and there was a fireplace opposite the door, now blocked. The original cabin had a slate roof.
The cabin had become derelict and was repaired and re-roofed by volunteers in 1985. It now has an unoffical dual use as a shooting cabin and walkers bothy (this is an exposed and relatively remote part of the moors and the Pennine Way path passes within a kilometre of the site),(information from N.T Head Warden). No butts were seen in this clough but those along Nether North Grain to the east are still in use,(Beamish.H 1987).
