Description

(1) 18th century terraced trackway, or cart width, leading from the Apes Tor shaft and gin circle [NTSMR 64469] to the main Deep Ecton Mine dressing floors on the western part of Ecton Hill. The trackway is truncated by later limestone quarrying [NTSMR 64472]. It has been postulated that this was the access point to the gin engine for the horses used here, and that ores were taken along this trackway to the mine's main upper dressing floors on the western part of Ecton Hill (Barnatt 2002). The trackway is not marked on any available map of the area, but was probably created at the time Apes Tor Level first came into use in 1760s and was out of use by the time detailed 19th century maps were drawn.
