Description

Site visits 08/03/2000 and 07/05/2000:
A modern dam lies across the Hodge Beck, just downstream of its confluence with the Shaw Beck, E of Stork House. It is concrete, with iron fixings for the central sluice gate, which is permanently open. On the E bank there are two half buried drums and a partially exposed value mechanism, as well as the remains of a possible structure and associated features (see NTSMR 32789). There are the remains of a concrete weir across the beck just downstream from the dam. This is named as a "weir" on the modern OS 1976 1:2,500 map [1]-[12].

The dam, which is technically a measuring weir, was built in 1936 by the Hull City Council Water Board as part of the abortive Farndale reservoir Scheme. The plan was create a large reservoir in Farndale by constructing a substantial dam, from which a regular supply could be pumped to Hull and the surrounding district. It was proposed to dam the two neighbouring valleys of Bransdale and North Rosedale and the water would be conveyed to the main reservoir through large underground aqueducts, to supplement water obtained from the River Dove. Surviving plans show that the small reservoir created in the Hodge Beck would have extended upstream almost as far as the Low South House road bridge, an area of some 54 arces [13].
