Description

Traces of a Romano-British salt production site were first noted in 1958 ( Farrar 1962, 141). Numerous fragments of salt boiling containers ( coarse pottery called briquetage) were found with sherds datable to the 2nd and 3rd centuries. When the site was visited briquetage was found on the surface immediately south and east of a disused sand pit ( 112,379) and along the edge of a tenement enclosure bank ( 112,434). It is suprising to find evidence for saltworking so far from the shoreline, in a position isolated from other known Romano-British occupation sites. For a place name possibly associated with this site see 112,539. This land is shown as heathland on Treswell's map of 1586. The tenement was enclosed out of the heath after 1775 ( Woodward).

The site has been partially quarried away by a sand pit now disused. A timber building has been constructed in the sand pit and scrap metal is being dumped in the wood to the north. The finds were concentrated to the east of this area within scrub woodland. Much of the briquetage was found in the spoil from animal burrows.
