Description

Highdown Windmill is shown standing on maps of 1595, 1610, 1724, c.1740, 1795, 1813 and 1825.{1} The site was
identified by Irving in the SW. corner of the hillfort (see 2234). He also notes that the mill stood 'till a few years ago'.{2}
This was apparently John Oliver's mill taken down in 1826. A mill stood here since before 1587 when it is shown on an
Armada map of the S. coast. {3}{4} For the Miller's Tomb see 2289. The brick base of a mill remains as a mill mound at
the SW corner of the hillfort.{5}{6}
