Monument Types

  • CHAPEL OF EASE (Medieval - 1300 AD to 1500 AD)

Description

West Humble Chapel. Small, of rectangular plan with parts of the east and west walls remaining. No architectural details left (Pevsner 1962).
Dating from possibly the C12 (Hart & Braun 1941).
Pottery dating from the C14 was found outside the south wall during excavation (Dunning 1938).
The chapel consisted of an aiseless nave and chancel, total length c. 16m (50ft), width of nave 5m (16ft) and of chancel 4m (12ft). Possibly built towards the end of the C12 as a ? chapel- of-ease for Mickleham Church Possibly abandoned c.1500 as church (certainly before c. 1540 on coin evidence) and later used as a farm building. Clearance and slight restoration work in 1930s revealed some associated burials with pottery loose above them (Hart & Braun 1941).

A plain rectangular building 48ft x 16ft built of courses of rounded flints in what are mainly sandstone walls. Very ruinous, only the west gable standing with part of the east wall and the lower part of the south. There seems to have been a window on the east wall, but the wall is broken away and no detail can be seem. The same is true of the window at the west end, perhaps once circular. In the west gable is a small light with remains of one jamb and of a trefoil head. May be C13. Remains of the chapel are not very valuable architecturally, but such remains are rare in Surrey. (EH SAM report 1989).
