Description
A sandstone upright, comprising an irregularly shaped sandstone boulder orientated WNW to ESE and measuring 1.78m high by 1.54m wide (at centre) and 0.72 wide towards its rounded top. The standing stone has been incorporated into a small flowerbed near the entrance to the caravan park, 14.69m southeast of Glenmona Gate Lodge (NTSMR131163). Some 30cm of chicken wire has been attached to the western most side to enable roses to climb across the stone. Some shrubs and thicker bushes have already reached quite a substantial height at the easternmost side. The stone was first recorded in 1906 (MacNeill, 1906, 176) and is shown on the 1st through to 4th editions of the OS map and designated ‘Standing Stone’. An exact date for the monument is uncertain, though it is likely to be prehistoric, most probably Early Bronze Age.
