Monument Types

  • CORN MILL (Post Medieval - 1540 AD to 1900 AD)

Description

Corn mill comprising wheel pit at east end of building a main mill room and a smaller lean to butted against the west wall the walls are dry stone with outer facing stones and an inner rubble core overall average width is 0.7 meters. Slate tiles litter the floors. The wheel pit is 6.5 x 2.8 meters and is now filled with collapsed stone and timbers (presumably from the wheel). The main mill room measures 8.4 x 6.5 meters its eastern end is largely filled with wall collapse but the stone slot carrying the beam of the waterwheel through the east wall can still be seen. It is capped by a stone slab and the beam is still in place. There are the remains of a window towards the centre of the south wall and a doorway at its west end. This has a stone thresh hold and is 1.8 meters wide. Inside three large red sandstone quern stones are set in the floor- a fourth has been taken away and is now a doorstop at Grove Farm. Out side the building, in front of the window are the possible remains of a platform, marked by the stone settings of rough boulder stones. Beside the doorway one of the stones is carved with a date and initials. Documentary sources record this as "1706 G.L." but it is now difficult to read. The lean to building is 4 x 2.5 meters and is full of wall collapse. It appears to have been open ended on its south side.

This small rectangular corn mill is situated above and to the N of Pasture Beck and the mill race was presumably fed by a stream that has since dried up or been diverted. It consists of a large room which has 3 mill stones one of which is dated 1873 and carved with the initials J B H. A lean-to was added to the W and the water wheel was housed to the east. The remains of the drive shaft still intact. Still standing in 1976, demolished within the last 6 years.

IMPORTANT FEATURES - Dated mill stones and probable remains of the drive shaft.
