Monument Types

  • UNIVALLATE HILLFORT (Iron Age - 800 BC to 42 AD)

Description

A lozenge-shaped univallate enclosure of 2.5ha on the summit of a steep sided hill. The defences consist of a rampart and ditch of varying size, following the 90m contour; on the E side the ditch is approx. 1.3m deep but on other sides only a slight berm is visible.

There are two main entrances, one on the E side and a smaller one on the W. The E entrance is well defined, with two very clear inturns, the W entrance is less obvious, only slightly inturned and may only be a breach of the rampart. The main gateway and defensive works exist where the natural slope is steepest, yet the lower ramparts and shallower ditches are situated where the present hillslope is less steep.
