Description
Rectangular room, with entrance onto corridor. No visible features, but excavation has shown presence of intact 4th-century stratigraphy. Currently occupied by marquee, which obscures ground surface and walls.[SNA62028]
The buried mosaic survey recorded in situ deposits of crushed limestone and opus signium suggesting htie room may have previously been tesselated. A small pit containing a virtually complete late C4th shell-tempered cooking pot had cut the floor levels perhaps indicating use of the room post-the removal of the postulated mosaic floor. [SNA62068]
2017 NE and SE room corners excavated. Traces of opus signinum floor against north wall, limestone core under bedding for floor survived elsewhere. Below this foundatio trenche for east wall. Charcoal dated this to be a 5th-6th century insertion. Therefore Room 28 mosaic is at least early 5th century (Papworth 2020) [SNA68988].
